How does GPS work? |
| |
The Global Positioning System
(GPS) is a group of 27 Earth-orbiting satellites (24 in operation and three
extras in case of a failure). When people talk about a ”GPS," they usually mean
a GPS receiver. The U.S. military developed and implemented this satellite
network as a military navigation system, but now lets everyone use the
signals.

Why
doesn't your system have monthly fees? |
| |
The GPS Satellites are launched
and paid for by the U. S. Department of Defense (DOD). While there are many
thousands of civil users of GPS worldwide, the system was designed for and
is operated by the U. S. military. The monthly fees associated with other
GPS providers pay for cellular or satellite radio communications, not GPS.
